Firearm Purchase Requirements
To purchase a firearm, please ensure you have the following:
Valid California Driver’s License or Identification Card
- Must be current and not expired
- Must reflect your current residential address
If your DL or ID does not show your current address, the only acceptable override is a current vehicle registrationwith the updated address.
If your DL or ID states “Federal Limits Apply,” you must also provide one of the following documents:
- Valid, unexpired U.S. passport or passport card
- Certified copy of U.S. birth certificate
- U.S. certified or consular report of birth abroad of a U.S. citizen
- Valid, unexpired foreign passport with a valid U.S. immigrant visa and approved I-94 arrival/departure form
- Certified birth certificate from a U.S. territory
- Certificate of naturalization or U.S. citizenship
- Valid, unexpired permanent resident card
We cannot accept hospital birth records, expired passports, or proof-of-life documents.
If your legal name has changed, please bring supporting documentation.
If you are not a U.S. citizen:
You must present a valid, unexpired green card.
Firearm Safety Card (FSC) Requirements
To purchase a firearm in California, you must present a valid, unexpired Firearm Safety Card (FSC) that is signed by both you and the instructor.
Where to Obtain an FSC:
You can obtain an FSC at our store or at any licensed gun store in California.
Why It’s Required:
The FSC is mandatory for firearm purchases and is required to initiate the background check process.
Exemptions:
You may be exempt from the FSC requirement if you have one of the following:
- A valid California hunting license
- A certified firearm instructor card
- Active law enforcement credentials
- Active duty or honorably retired military status

Secondary Proof of Residency — Required for Handgun Purchases Only
To comply with California law, handgun purchasers must provide one of the following documents as secondary proof of residency:
Accepted Documents:
- Current vehicle registration (must be unexpired and show your current residential address)
- Utility bill dated within the last 3 months (gas, water, electric, telephone, cable, or internet — no cell phone bills)
- Residential lease or rental agreement (must include your current address, be signed, dated, and notarized)
- Property deed
- Valid California Concealed Carry Permit (CCW)
- Current Certificate of Eligibility (COE)
- Current C&R 03 FFL license with full name and address
- Proof of current DMV-issued disabled placard
- Resident hunting license issued by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife
- Fishing license (commercial, resident sport, lifetime, or 1-, 2-, or 10-day license issued by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife)
Not Accepted:
- Mortgage statements
- Bank statements
- Insurance bills
- DMV registration renewals
- Brown card
- Cellular phone bills
- Fishing validations or report cards
- Self-filled hunting licenses
- Pay stubs
- Voter registration cards
